In the United States, it's called "American Federal style," referring to the early days of our nation after the Revolutionary War. Neoclassical furniture traces its heritage back to pre-war France and shows distinct influence by Roman-style furniture excavated at the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. But it was English cabinet maker George Hepplewhite that designed the Federal style that we know today. Recognizing American Federal-style furniture - antique or recreated - is quite simple. Look for bedroom furniture that makes use of "curvilinear" forms; straight across on the bed end piece, with a curved headboard. Slender, tapering bedposts are exquisite compliments to the head and end pieces. Like tables and chairs of the same period, "turned" bed stand legs have a slight swell and a ball-like foot. These designs were introduced in the latter days of the 1800's. "Turning" the wood is the mark of a master craftsman at work; that craftsman may have created the bedroom furniture two hundred years ago, or just yesterday. This type of furniture is not mass-produced, but carefully and painstakingly created piece by piece. Federal-style beds are often inlaid with carved decorative designs that are simple but elegant. White, or parchment, bedroom bedboard sets are sometimes created in American Federal style, but not often; the original furniture makers of the early 1800's mostly used darker hardwoods. When looking for genuine antique American Federal bedroom furniture or modern Federal creations, look for classic but simple designs, intricate workmanship and curvilinear forms. It's easy to imagine such furniture gracing the bedroom of First Lady Martha Washington; it can be yours as well.
